What is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer is a condition that develops as a result of the uncontrolled proliferation of cells that make up breast tissue. Although it is mostly seen in women, it can rarely be encountered in men as well. Early diagnosis is of vital importance in terms of controlling the disease and preserving the quality of life. The habit of self-examination and annual doctor check-ups are the most powerful weapons in the fight against this disease.
What Are the Symptoms?
The disease may not show any symptoms in the early stages; therefore, routine screenings (Mammography, etc.) are critical. In advanced cases, the following symptoms may be observed:
- Painless mass/swelling felt in the breast or armpit.
- Bloody or clear discharge from the nipple.
- Orange peel appearance, redness, or dimpling on the breast skin.
- Inward retraction or deformity of the nipple.
- Sudden changes in breast size or symmetry.
Which Methods Are Used in the Diagnosis Process?
Physical examination is the first step in Ankara breast cancer diagnosis processes. If the physician deems it necessary, imaging methods are used:
- Mammography: It is the gold standard screening method for women over 40.
- Breast Ultrasonography: It is used especially in young tissues and to understand the structure of masses.
- Breast MRI: It is preferred in high-risk patients or cases requiring detailed examination.
- Biopsy: It is the process of taking a sample from the suspicious tissue for pathological examination and making a definitive diagnosis.
Risk Factors and the Importance of Early Diagnosis
Factors such as genetic predisposition (family history), advanced age, never having given birth, early menstruation and late menopause (long-term exposure to estrogen), and obesity can increase the risk. Early diagnosis can allow the disease to be treated with more limited surgical interventions (such as breast-conserving surgery) and can help extend life expectancy.
The Habit of Checking Saves Lives
It is recommended that every woman from the age of 20 performs a “Self-Breast Examination” once a month on the days following the end of her period. After the age of 40, a general surgery specialist examination and mammography screening should not be neglected once a year.
